WAF is a feminist organisation which was launched in 1989 to challenge the rise of fundamentalism in all religions, when battle lines were being drawn simplistically between religious fundamentalists on one side and racists and liberals on the other, leaving no space for women's voices. WAF includes women from across the world and from a wide range of backgrounds.
WAF recognises fundamentalism as a worldwide phenomenon in all religions, which mobilises religion for political ends.
WAF believes that resistance to racism and fundamentalism also involves a struggle for secularism, which is one of a number of preconditions for equal rights for those of all religions or none.
